The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Overload Unit Officers, arrested a foreign male suspect for fraud and contravention of the Immigration Act, in the Kempton Park area.
While patrolling along the R24 freeway near Isando, Officers noticed several vehicles parked on the yellow lane. As they instructed drivers to move, a white Nissan Almera remained stationary, with the driver preoccupied on his phone. Upon approaching the vehicle, officers discovered that the driver was operating as an e-hailing cab without Professional Driving Permit (PRDP) and he could not produce valid documentation to be in South Africa.
Further inspection revealed discrepancies in the vehicle’s VIN numbers, the one on the windscreen and information plate did not match the one on the chassis. Both VINs, however, belonged to similar Nissan Almera vehicles with different registrations. With assistance from the EMPD Control Centre, contact was made with the two legitimate vehicle owners. One of the victims arrived at the scene with his Almera, confirming ownership through valid documentation.
The cloned vehicle was impounded and taken to the SAPS pound for further investigation. The suspect was arrested and detained at Kempton Park Police Station. He is expected to appear before the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.
