Three suspects, aged between 30 and 39, were arrested for extortion, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition following a successful operation conducted in the Enhlanzeni area on Monday, 13 April 2026.
Members of the Provincial Anti-Hijacking Task Team and the Provincial #AntiGangUnit, acted on information about suspects allegedly extorting money from workers at the Tekwane West dumping site. The suspects, travelling in a silver Volkswagen Polo without registration plates, were located and apprehended.
A 9mm firearm was recovered, along with cash amounting to R3 480, believed to be proceeds of extortion. Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had been collecting “protection fees” from workers.
The suspects are expected to appear before the Kanyamazane Periodical Court on 14 April 2026. Police investigations, including the origin of the firearm, are ongoing.
The SAPS remains committed to tackling extortion and related crimes.
