Detectives and Uniformed Police Officers from King Shaka International Airport (KSIA) apprehended two (2) previously convicted criminals for an attempted robbery earlier today (Tuesday 14:11).
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was contacted by Police Officers searching for a white Kia Sonnet that had driven through the boom gates at the airport while fleeing the scene of a crime. The suspects drove over spikes and fled. The information was shared with Reaction Officers, and a search was immediately initiated.
KSIA SAPS members located the vehicle with two (2) suspects in a bush in close proximity to the airport. The men were immediately placed under arrest, and a remote jammer (picture 5) was found hidden in a suspect’s underwear. All four (4) tyres of the vehicle were punctured by the spikes, forcing the suspects to conceal the vehicle in the dense bush. They were arrested while attempting to flee on foot.
Investigations confirmed that the vehicle was hired from a car rental company in Empangeni – KZN on November 5, 2025. Number plates were then changed (picture 6) by the occupants. Both suspects in custody were recently released from Westville Prison in KZN and were serving lengthy sentences after being convicted for Theft of a State Firearm from the same airport and several cases of fraud.
It is believed that the suspects are responsible for several crimes perpetrated in Durban – KZN & surrounding areas.
