The South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape, in partnership with several departments and external stakeholders, executed #OperationShanela2 disruptive actions across the five districts of the province from Monday, 25 May until Sunday, 31 May 2026.
The targeted intelligence-driven operations, led by the Provincial Commissioner, Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, District Commissioners and senior officers at provincial, district and station level, resulted in the arrest of 269 suspects for various offences.
The suspects were arrested for crimes including dealing in drugs, illegal dealing in liquor, possession of drugs, business and residential robberies, attempted murder, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH) and other offences.
The collaborative efforts also led to the seizure of various items, including liquor, copper, dagga, mandrax tablets, crystal meth and magic mushrooms, which were confiscated as evidence.
These successes followed extensive operations during which members and their counterparts searched numerous persons, vehicles and premises. They also conducted roadblocks, tracing operations and compliance inspections at licensed liquor outlets, second-hand goods dealers, formal and informal businesses, farms, scrapyards and other establishments.
Detectives conducted tracing operations in search of wanted suspects and successfully traced suspects who were wanted for various offences.
Community engagements also continued across the province where SAPS, in conjunction with community policing structures, interacted and engaged with communities.
Police also observed #ChildProtectionMonth through school visits, radio engagements and interactions with the community during accountability sessions and meetings.
The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, expressed her appreciation to all members and stakeholders involved in the operations and reiterated that SAPS remains committed to combating crime and maintaining law and order, warning criminals that the Northern Cape is no safe haven for those who choose to break the law.
