A multi-disciplinary operation early on the morning of 27 April 2026, led to the arrest of a 54-year-old female suspect for operating an unlicensed pharmacy and medical practice from a residential premises in Duncan Village.
Shortly after midnight, a joint team comprising the Eastern Cape Missing Person Unit, East London K9 Unit, and Buffalo City Environmental Health Services acted on intelligence and conducted a search at the identified address. During the operation, authorities seized a substantial quantity of medication, injections, a speed point device, and an undisclosed amount of cash. The estimated street value of the confiscated medicines is R85 500-00.
The suspect was taken into custody and is currently detained. She faces charges under the Medicines and Related Substances Act 101 of 1965 (for possession of scheduled substances), the Health
Professions Act 56 of 1974 (for practising without registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa), and contravention of Regulation 39(a)(ii)(c) relating to the repackaging of medicines.
“As SAPS we commend the collaborative efforts of the Eastern Cape Missing Person Unit, East London K9 Unit, and Buffalo City Environmental Health Services for their swift and decisive action in dismantling this illegal operation. The proliferation of unlicensed medical practices in our communities is not merely a regulatory violation, it is a direct threat to the lives and health of vulnerable citizens, who are often exploited with false promises of affordable care,” remarked the Provincial Commissioner of Eastern Cape Lieutenant General Vuyisile Ncata.
A criminal case has been registered and investigations are ongoing, and further charges may be added as the probe continues.
The suspect is expected to appear before the East London Magistrate’s Court soon.
