On 03 April 2026, Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) K9 Unit officers received information about a hijacked vehicle in Atteridgeville.
The members stayed on alert and on the lookout when they spotted a similar vehicle “a white Toyota Vitz” at about 00:20 driving in contra-flow in Pretoria Central, which ensued a chase. The driver of the stolen vehicle lost control and crashed near Church Square.
The suspect then ran away, but officers swiftly pursued him on foot and managed to apprehend him a block away from the accident scene. It is alleged the vehicle was reported hijacked at Atteridgeville Hostels by four armed suspects earlier that night. Only one suspect was in the vehicle when it was spotted.
The suspect was immediately arrested for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle and was detained at a local police station
